The Lithium Ion Battery

Lithium ion batteries can be formed into a wide variety of shapes and sizes to efficiently fill available space in the devices they power.

These batteries are also lighter than equivalents in other chemistries — often much lighter. Li-ion batteries require no maintenance and do not suffer from memory effect. Memory effect is when the battery uses only a partial charge and then is re-charged on a consistent basis. Eventually the battery will “forget” it has the memory capacity to hold a longer charge as the cells become ineffective. The result is a decreased capacity and eventual failure.

Lithium ion batteries also have a low self-discharge rate of approximately 5% per month, compared with over 30% per month and 20% per month in nickel metal hydride batteries and nickel cadmium batteries, respectively.

A lithium ion battery cannot be overcharged because the cell temperature is internally monitored to prevent extremes. After the first year, your battery may lose some capacity, however lithium ion are expected to last 2-3 years and will fully perform as long as five years.
